Administrative Overview
The Cooperative Extension Service in each county is funded by Federal (USDA), state and county government programs. It is administered by New Mexico State University. Sierra County's cooperative extension service office employs 2 full time and 1 part time staff.

IDEAS FOR COOKING AND NUTRITION

DESCRIPTION
|
Provides information about health and home economy through two-hour hands-on classes. Class participants prepare and eat a meal with the nutrition educator. The nutrition Educator also responds to telephone inquiries and provides literature to the public about canning, freezing, drying and food preparation. Funding is provided by the New Mexico Human Services Income Support Division.

ELIGIBILITY
|
Hands-on nutrition classes are offered to any group composed of at least 50% low income individuals. (All public classrooms and most groups in Sierra County quality.) Any person may call the Nutrition Educator (Sandra Jones @ 894-2375) for cooking advice, recipes and nutrition information.

AGRICULTURAL SUPPORT SERVICES
| DESCRIPTION |
Provides support for farming, ranching and urban horticulture. Distributes brochures, answers questions and gives advice to county residents who raise crops, manage livestock or garden. An annual county agricultural fair at the Sierra County Fair Barn provides opportunities for recognition of outstanding achievement and is a venue for all kinds of community participation at booths and tables. |

Competing for some of the awards may require a fee of $2 or $3 per contestant entry (usually only the livestock events). |

4-H PROGRAM

Boys and girls aged 5 to 8 ("Clover buds") or 9 to 19 (4-H). |
| DESCRIPTION |
Youth education and activity club offers life skills training, volunteer experience and opportunities for achievement designed especially for children who live in rural households. Participants work independently on projects and meet monthly for group activities supervised by adult volunteers. Projects are programs for learning about livestock, gardening, water management, money management, nutrition, sewing and more. Includes opportunity to participate in regional and state competitions and practice public speaking. Sierra County has clubs in Arrey, Caballo, Truth or Consequences, Winston and more. New clubs form easily with any group of five new participants. The 4-H club program is also a volunteer opportunity for adults who can teach life skills or help at events. |

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT / REDTT PROGRAM
| DESCRIPTION |
Sponsors a citizen group that promotes tourism to strengthen Sierra County's economy: The Sierra County Tourism Council. The council's main project is the Rural Economic Development Through Tourism (REDTT) group, which meets monthly at the county cooperative extension office. REDTT has 18 to 20 members and welcomes new participants. REDTT makes street banners for community festivals, trains people to lead tours, prints descriptive brochures and conducts surveys. |

Distributes home health and home economy information. Mails newsletters to families about child development and family safety. |
