Admin. Office Travel Instructions
From I-25 take exit 75, then a sharp right onto Hwy 187. Desert Haven is 2 miles south of the exit at mile marker 34.

Administrative Hours
No set office hours. Tuesday lunch meeting for volunteers is open to visitors to the refuge. Call for details.

Administrative Overview
Desert Haven is a no-kill domestic animal refuge and the major project to the Sierra County Humane Society, a non profit animal welfare organization. It is staffed by volunteers and supported by local thrift shop. Desert Haven has small full hook-up RV Campground for visiting volunteers, work campers and RV'ing travelers. . The Refuge includes an Birdland & Animal House - several large aviaries, Cat Neighborhood and Dog Town.

Agency Services

ANIMAL SANCTUARY/ADOPTION

DESCRIPTION No-kill refuge for lost, unwanted or neglected companion animals is managed by local and visiting volunteer staff. Matches animals to new owners, assists with spay and neuter of animals, provides permanent care for surviving pets of deceased persons and provides temporary boarding care for the pets of persons transitioning through domestic abuse shelters.
FEES There is a minimal adoption fee of $65 to adopt a dog or cat.

WORK CAMPER PROGRAM

AGE RANGE Adults only
DESCRIPTION Provides RV accommodations for "workampers" who assist with small construction projects, help care for animals and work at the nearby thrift store. Volunteers are provided with a large parking space for their RV. Spaces include full hook-ups with well water and 30/50 AMP power. The workamper program is active year-round.
FEES Participants must pay that portion of their utility expenses that exceeds a weekly utility allowance of $12.50 (winter) or $15.00 (summer)

PAWS AND CLAWS THRIFT SHOP

Thrift store supports the Sierra County Humane Society and its programs including spay/neuter, adopt-a-classroom and Desert Haven Animal Refuge. It is staffed by volunteers, some of whom stay at the RV Park. For convenience, Paws and Claws has a donation drop box on site.
HOURS Wednesday: 1:00 pm-4:00 pm, Thursday: 10:00 am-3:00 pm, Friday: 10 am-4pm, Saturday: 10:00 am-3:00 pm.

RAINBOW BRIDGE PET CEMETERY

DESCRIPTION Offers gravesites and performs the respectful burial of companion animals using volunteer staff.
FEES 3' X 2' plot - $50.00, 3' X 4' plot - $75. Pickup $10.
HOURS Anytime.
