Administrative Overview
The Emergency Food and Shelter Program was created by Congress to help meet the needs of hungry and homeless people throughout the United States and its territories by allocating federal funds for the provision of food and shelter. The program is governed by a national board composed of representatives of the American Red Cross; Catholic Charities, USA; United Jewish Communities; The National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.; The Salvation Army; and United Way of America. The Board is chaired by a representative of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

EMERGENCY FOOD & SHELTER PROGRAM

DESCRIPTION The EFSP board has funds available to help organizations in Sierra County that are currently helping in the community with emergency food and shelter and with emergency rent and utilities payments.
ELIGIBILITY The following requirements must be met for an organization to be eligible for these funds:
(1) Must be a private voluntary non-profit or unit of government, (2) have an accounting system, (3) practice non-discrimination in their services, (4) have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter in their programs, and have an ongoing program which can be supplemented with these funds, (5) if a private voluntary organization, they must have a voluntary board, (6) must have a federal EIN (Emergency Identification Number). All agencies meeting these qualifications are urged to apply. Please note that funds will be distributed in the amount of $500 or more.

APPLICATION Organizations must meet the above criteria and submit a letter of intent to the board for review.
