Administrative Overview
With a staff of 175 full and part-time employees, FYI provides a variety of programs to the community. These programs cover the spectrum from prevention and education to intervention and treatment. FYI is a major provider of social services for youth and their families in the Las Cruces area.

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT SERVICES

Services provided to children and families who are at risk for disruption of the family unit, children with serious emotional disturbance, or who are transitioning from hospitalization or residential treatment to outpatient care. Services are focused on providing structured interventions, in the home, to assist children/families in improved functioning of behaviors.

BEHAVIORAL RESPITE CARE - Respite care is intended to provide relief to primary care givers of children with serious emotional disturbances, neurobiological and behavioral disorders. Services are provided in the family's home and in structured community settings. Respite is short-term care to assist families in reducing the stress and demand of caring for children with extensive needs.

SUMMER FOOD SERVICE PROGRAM

| DESCRIPTION |
THE Summer food service program provides free meals to children throughout Las Cruces in 12 different locations. Children are welcomed each day to receive free breakfasts and lunches. Poverty stricken and subsidized housing areas are targeted for this service. Children are involved in learning about good nutrition and developing healthy eating habits through nutrition education and game playing activities. |

OUTPATIENT COUNSELING

OUTPATIENT COUNSELING - FYI offers a number of programs:
Family Focus Program -- Intervention and treatment services offered to children, adolescents, and their families based on the family's strengths and needs. These services may include crisis management, counseling, assessment, educational groups, therapy, and psychiatric intervention. The professional staff provides specialized services for substance abuse, emotional disturbances, educational issues, family problems, and behavior disorders.
Family Centered Treatment Programs -- Home-based programs which provide voluntary services to families who are experiencing severe disturbance in their functioning that may affect the well-being of the children. Services to be provided to these families will include (but are not limited to) therapeutic intervention, skill building (i.e., parenting, communication skills, household management, and conflict resolution), advocacy, and networking families with appropriate community agencies.
Treatment Foster Care -- Provides a structured and therapeutic environment with severe emotional and/or behavioral disturbances. Children cared for and supervised by foster families who have been trained and have the experience to work with their special needs. A variety of services, including case management, individual/family therapy, and psychiatric services are available to the child. The goal of the program is to assist the child and his/her family to learn the skills necessary to effectively function as a family system.

Potential clients can walk in or call for an appointment. An appointment will be scheduled with a therapist to assess needs and develop the most appropriate strategies. Admission of children into Treatment Foster Care must be pre-authorized by Medicaid and meet medical necessity guidelines.

CHILDREN'S SAFEHOUSE - Provides quality, child-sensitive forensic interviews in cases of alleged sexual abuse or in situations where children may have witnessed a crime. In some cases, adults with developmental disabilities are interviewed in this setting. |

HEALTH EDUCATION AND PREVENTION PROGRAMS

HEALTH EDUCATION AND PREVENTION PROGRAMS - Provides county-wide services to youth of all ages. Prevention programs consist of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention/education focusing on decision-making, peer pressure, self esteem, and positive self-image development when addressing substance use/abuse issues. Types of programs include curriculum training, one-on-one, health fairs, youth leadership conferences, and co-sponsoring community youth events. |

HIV/AIDS/STD PREVENTION EDUCATION

| DESCRIPTION |
HIV/AIDS/STD PREVENTION EDUCATION - Services include health education/risk reduction programs to at-risk populations, which include women, men having sex with men, youth, injection drug users, other substance abusers, and incarcerated and migrant workers and their families.
FYI utilizes peer educators to conduct street outreach to high-risk individuals in both rural and urban settings. Peers also function to sustain healthy behavior change of clients. This program has certified staff to train teachers, health care providers, and other organizations in HIV/STD prevention and sexuality issues. FYI facilitates groups for gay men, women, and youth. The AIDS Program houses the syringe exchange program, which targets the injection drug user population. Renee Boudreau, MS Coordinator, should be contacted for more information at (575) 522-4004.

CHILD CARE FOOD PROGRAM

| DESCRIPTION |
THE CHILD AND ADULT CARE FOOD PROGRAM (CACFP)- Provides services in five counties for day care providers conducting day care for children in their own homes. A non-resident must be present in order for a daycare provider to participate in the CACFP and the home must meet and abide by health and safety regulations. The daycare provider will be reimbursed for nutritious meals that meet USDA standards and are served to the children in their care. Child development, parenting and nutrition education classes are also provided free of charge to each participant. There is a $15.00 yearly charge for a day care provider to participate in the CACFP. Program staff will also register day care providers that are participating in the Child Care Assistance Program and not necessarily in the CACFP program.

JUVENILE COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS

JUVENILE COMMUNITY CORRECTIONS - Provides services to adjudicated youth in Dona Ana County. The program consists of the following components: referral and intake, client services management, community service, education and job development, client supervision, substance abuse treatment, victim restitution, and follow-up. Home detention/electronic monitoring is an alternative to secure detention for non-violent pre and post-adjudicated youth in Dona Ana County. This program consists of intensive surveillance, urine analysis, substance use/abuse assessment and referral for treatment.

RUNAWAY SHELTER/TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM

| DESCRIPTION |
RUNAWAY SHELTER/TRANSITIONAL LIVING PROGRAM - Provides 24-hour supervision, room and board for clients from age 12 to 17. The main goal of the shelter is to provide case management and services and permanent placement in an appropriate facility or home for youth that are misplaced due to situations ranging from family crisis to homelessness. In addition to shelter services, a transitional program is available to persons 16-21 years of age. Persons 16-17 will start the program at the shelter then move into apartments. During the program, clients will be instructed in independent living skills by program staff.

AMERICORPS PROGRAM - National Service program that engages thousands of Americans in a domestic Peace Corps to get things done in our communities. In exchange for one or two years of service, AmeriCorps members receive education awards to help finance their college education.
The local FYI Program places members in three projects: 1) STAY - alternative education services to youth not able to attend public school
2) GEMS - tutoring services to children in grades K-5 not reading at grade level, and
3) Neighborhood Center - safe-after-school services in at risk neighborhoods.

ADOLESCENT RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM - The Las Cruces Group provide 24-hour structured therapeutic environments for adolescents between the ageof 13-18 ho meet Medicaid standards for residential care. Group Home services include community based school programming, on-site clinical services, consulting and training. In accordance with the resident's individual treatment plans, provision is made for access to psychiatric care and to community resources such as recreational, educational, and social services.
