MEDICARE

DESCRIPTION MEDICARE - Divided into two different parts, Part A and Part B.
To receive Part A one must be 65 years old or older, be on disability for longer than 24 months, be on railroad retirement for 24 months, or have permanent kidney failure.

Part A helps cover the following:
(1) Hospital stays, including semiprivate room, meals, general nursing, and other hospital services and supplies. This includes care you get in critical access hospitals and inpatient mental health.
(2) Skilled nursing facility care including semiprivate room, meals, skilled nursing and rehabilitative services, and other services and supplies.
(3) Home health care, part-time skilled nursing care, physical therapy,occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, home health aide services, medical social services, durable medical equipment, medical supplies and other services.
(4) Hospice care, medical and support services from a Medicare approved hospice for people with a terminal illness, drugs for symptom control and pain relief, and other services not otherwise covered by Medicare. Hospice care is generally given in the patient's home. However, short-term hospital and inpatient respite care are covered when needed.
(5) Blood - pints of blood that one gets at a hospital or skilled nursing home during a covered stay.

Medicare Part B helps cover the doctors' services, outpatient hospital care, and some other medical services that Part A does not cover, such as some of the services of physical and occupational therapists, and some home health care.

Part B covers such services as:
Medical and other services which includes doctors' services, outpatient medical and surgical services and supplies, diagnostic tests, ambulatory surgery center facility fees for approved procedures, and durable medical equipment;

Clinical laboratory services including blood tests, urinalysis, and more; Home health care such as part-time skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy, home health aide services, medical social services, durable medical equipment and medical supplies and other services; outpatient hospital services received as an outpatient as part of a doctor's care;

Blood which is received as an outpatient or as part of a Part B covered service.

ELIGIBILITY Anyone who paid Medicare taxes for 10 years, or for 40 quarters, is eligible if they are 65 years of age, or disabled, or have kidney failure and are in need of regular dialysis.
FEES Fees are fixed and are paid through Social Security. Part A of Medicare has no fee but Part B costs $94.90 a month for individuals with incomes less than $80,000; above that the premium is based upon income.
