Truth or Consequences
Municipal Schools is the only school system in Sierra County, population
12,000. The district has has enrollment of 1547 students from 3yrs
through grade 12. There are six schools and an administrative office.
Three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school and one
alternative.

| DESCRIPTION |
This program starts at
kindergarten and is offered through the eighth grade. The major goal
of the Bilingual Education Program is to develop English proficiency,
academic success, and self-esteem.

| ELIGIBILITY |
In a bilingual education classroom, Spanish instruction is used for
literacy development with an English as Second Language (ESL) component
to develop English language skills. Bilingual education classrooms provide bilingual instruction
(Spanish and English) through asupp ortive and culturally relevant environment. The intent is to increase
the opportunities for academic success for all Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. Students who do not
speak English and students who wish to learn Spanish are eligible. |

MIGRANT EDUCATION |
| DESCRIPTION |
Migrant education
programs meet the needs of migrant students by providing dental, medical, and educational
services to currently enrolled students to ensure their full participation
and academic achievement in school. The migrant education home liaison also works with migrant
families to promote literacy by visiting homes and providing books, tapes, videos,
and other instructional materials. Parents are instructed on the important of reading to
their children and how to promote academic achievement. |

| DESCRIPTION |
At Risk/Safe Schools
Program assists school in identifying and providing services to at-risk students and to
maintain a safe school environment.

Students can be
identified as at-risk for suspension, drop-out, low achievement, attendance problems,
gang and/or violent behavior, social problems, families in crisis, and victimization. These
students can be served through referrals from schools and community agencies./td>

Drug Abuse Education/Prevention |
| DESCRIPTION |
SAFE AND DRUG-FREE SCHOOLS - A series of prevention/intervention activities designed to prevent
alcohol/drug abuse by all students. Some of the activities are designed for all students,
while others are targeted toward specific
"at-risk" students through support and
intervention teams at each school to identify those students at risk and to provide
appropriate intervention and referral services. |
SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT |
| DESCRIPTION |
Supports parents, teachers, and principals in the location,
identification, and provision of educational services for exceptional students in the Truth or
Consequences Public School District. The department coordinates
special education evaluation, placement in instructional programs, and support services
throughout the district and maintains compliance with state and federal laws.. |
