5        June Computer Classes

Each class is $18 for the 3-week session. Register in advance Mon-Fri, 12-5pm at the Lab. Registration is not final until the class fee has been paid and must be completed prior to class date. intro to computersThe Internet offers a wealth of information and entertainment. In this beginner level class you will explore the web to find out what is available; learn how to search effectively; download and manage information; and keep your personal information safe.

  6:30-8:30pm, three consecutive Thursdays.

Excel logoKeeping track of important data is essential in today's busy world. Microsoft Excel is a useful program for organizing finances, inventory lists, and personnel records. Learn how to create spreadsheets, format worksheets, and perform basic calculations in this introductory course.

 

The Last Waltz
5        Movie Night - The Last Waltz   
7pm, Senior Recreation Center, 301 Foch, T or C

Concert film of The Band's last concert, with a "few friends" - including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, and Ringo Starr - and a full brass band showing up to help them out. 6        Team Roping  

6pm, City Rodeo Arena, south of Sierra Feed & Mercantile, T or C

Team Roping events will be held twice a month on Friday nights during the summer. Enter at 6pm; roping starts at 7pm. Spectators welcome!  Contact: E.D. Edwards, 575-740-0572.



7        Free Fishing Day / Kids Fishing Derby & Educational Activities
Statewide / Caballo Lake State Park

To celebrate National Fishing Day, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish is granting all anglers a day of free fishing on public waters statewide. All day on June 7, no one needs a Fishing derby - Lake Caballolicense or habitat stamp, although all other fishing rules apply.

Fishing activities for kids will also be held state-wide. The fishing derby at Caballo Lake State Park begins at 7am and goes until noon; educational activities start at 3pm and will include fun facts on fishing, instruction on lure tying and bait, fish print making, and more! 7        25th Annual Winston Fiesta 

All day, Winston Community Center, Winston - 38 miles northwest of T or C

Line up begins at 10am for an 11 o'clock parade. Other events include a Horsemanship Competition, vendors and food concessions, and a dance in the evening with music by Spur Ride. Games for kids of all ages will be offered throughout the day. Free. Contact: Larry Holmes, 575-743-0187.



7        Spring Fiesta  

11am-4pm, El Camino Real International Heritage Center

Learn about the New Mexican environment and its wonderful resources through information booths and hands-on activities. Scheduled events include:

11am - Artist Reception for "Reflections of Rio Abajo," a show by photographer Charlie Sanchez Jr. (with poetry by Irene Sanchez). Artist talk at 11; poetry reading at 12.

2pm - "Our Gift from Spain: How Mediterranean Plants and Foods Came to New Mexico," a slide presentation and talk by zoologist/wildlife management expert/writer/photographer Bill Dunmire, courtesy of New Mexico Humanities Council.

7        Hot Springs Gymkhana   
4pm, Sierra County Sheriff's Posse Rodeo Arena, T or C

Sierra County youth age 2 - 18 can enter to compete in the following events, depending on their age categories: barrels, pole bending, flag race, goat tagging/tying, team roping, breakaway roping, and steer riding. Entry fees vary. Each gymkhana includes a raffle and concessions. Enter at 4pm; grand entry is at 5pm.

7-8     Rio Grande Sailing Club's 2008 Anniversary Cup  
Elephant Butte Lake

sailing on Elephant Butte Lake The Cup will be a distance event for PHRF-eligible boats with one fleet using PHRF handicap. Race length will depend on wind and will be south toward the east side of Rattlesnake Island, or to the area between Rattlesnake Island and the Elephant Butte.

Saturday - 2pm: Skippers meeting at Strasia Compound (Mallard Lane near Rock Canyon). 4:30pm: First gun/warning signal (south of Rock Canyon Marina)
Sunday - 11:30am:  Awards for the Cup and Spring Races at Strasia Compound.

Mark Santiago, director of the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces, will deliver the first of two lectures sponsored by Canada Alamosa Institute, Inc. of Monticello, and Human Systems Research, Inc. of Las Cruces.

The film centers on a party of schoolgirls who disappear after being drawn into a mysterious rock formation in Australia in 1900. Donations accepted.

14      Run To The Music Biker Rally / Poker Run  

8:30am-4pm, Anderson Homes, 402 Hwy 195, Elephant Butte

There'll be bikes, leather, drawings, prizes, games and a bike rodeo at this event, with music provided by Nashville recording artist (and Hot Springs High School band director) Scooter Jones.

Co-sponsored by Hot Springs High School Music Boosters, American Legion Riders, and Christian Motorcycle Assocation, with help from numerous local businesses, the rally/run will raise money for travel expenses needed in order for the HSHS Band & Choir to enter a competition at Disneyland next year. 14      18th Annual Elephant Butte Chile Challenge Cook Off  chile cook-off contestants
11am, Desert Cove Campground
Elephant Butte Lake State Park

Prizes will be awarded to the best red and the green chile on the beach!

Spectators pay park admission fee plus $2 to taste/vote in the People's Choice award. Judging begins at 11. Proceeds go toward Sierra Santas and Elephant Butte Lions Club. The Lions Club will have a hamburger stand; cool off with ice cream for only $1.

14      Trip to the Armendaris Ranch Bat Caves 
Meet at the Geronimo Springs Museum at 1pm, 211 Main Street, T or C

Travel to the Armendaris Ranch for a tour, and at dusk, see thousands of bats take flight. This event is a fundraiser for the Geronimo Springs Museum; $150 per person includes a meal. Space is limited; advance reservations are required. Since four-wheel drives are necessary for the tour, carpooling will be implemented.

14      June Art Hop   
6-9pm, downtown Truth or Consequences

Many of downtown's galleries, studios, stores and restaurants are open for the evening on the second Saturday of every month from 6-9, rain or shine. Special events scheduled for June include:
  • Artist/artisan reception at Celestial Creations, where basket weaver Holly Modine of Magdalena will demonstrate her craft, and painter Jane Harshbarger of Albuquerque will also be on handArt Hop logo
  • Happy Belly Deli will display work by Jeff Barbour and host an opening reception with refreshments
  • At M, Al Harp's Paint By Numbers Invasion continues
  • Percussion/guitar trio, a bellydancer, and an open mike at Redbone

14      Gladis McGuire Trio in Concert 

6:30pm, Geronimo Springs Museum, 211 Main Street, T or C

A taco dinner at 6:30 will be followed by the concert at 7:30. The McGuire Trio hails from Atlanta and Albuquerque. Funds raised at this event will go toward replacing the front wall of the museum. $10 donation. Contact:  LaRena Miller, 575-894-6600.

Drag Boat Racing
9am, Elephant Butte Lake

Don't let the name fool you; this event is not just for drag boats! All types of watercraft can race - anything from jet skis and other PWCs to pontoon boats and day cruisers! Races start at 9am and usually end by 4pm. Saturdays are for qualifying and declaring; eliminations & awards are on Sunday. Entry fee is $75. Tour of the Armendaris Ranch in the Historic Fra Cristobal Mountains
Meet at the Geronimo Springs Museum at 8am; return around 6pm.

See geologic formations and wildlife in their natural habitat on this tour of the Ranch, which is a fundraiser for the Geronimo Springs Museum. Advance reservations are required, as space is limited.  Cost is $150 per person and includes a meal. Four-wheel drive/high clearance vehicles are necessary; car-pooling will be implemented. Colossal Catfish Classic
7pm-7am, Elephant Butte Lake State Park
