Swimming Pool Task Force

Public Meeting : July 21, 2005

Attendees:   Linda Phillips, Bobbi Landon, Jackye McDaniel, Jane Greene, Ivan J Brown Anne V Brown, Norma Webster, Betsy Robertson, Harlan Balko, Elsie Clark, Jo Morfesy Bruce Teschner.

We held the meeting in the Computer Room at the Ken James Senior Center at 5:30 pm.

Linda Phillips officially opened the meeting and asked for approval of the prior minutes. She noted that the prior minutes said that each meeting was worth 2 hours of in-kind time for each participant and asked that we correct it so that the in-kind time donated is the same as the length of the particular meeting. The minutes were approved with that correction.

Mr. Harlan Balko spoke to us. He represents Thrivent Financial Foundation, a non-profit Fraternal organization primarily in Wisconsin and Minnesota. Last year they donated seven million dollars to worthy groups. They work first with churches and then with non-political community groups. Their fraternal group will donate matching funds and they will need a receipt of some kind. Mr. Balko thinks we are a worthy group and he has started the procedure for us to receive matching funds! Our group sincerely thanked him.

Ivan and Anne Brown spoke to us. They told us that many local fraternal Lodges had surplus funds that must be donated. They mentioned the American Legion, Moose, Elks, and VFW . We will need separate letters of application for each eligible group.

Bobbie Landon and Jackye McDaniels wore our new "Roof Us" t-shirts and Bruce Teschner took their photographs

Financial Committee Jane Greene gave the Financial Committee report. We have $368.78 on hand in our State Bank account. We paid $157.22 for half down on the t-shirts but we still owe the other half on the t-shirts. Jane also spoke about the Requisition Forms. We need to attach our sales receipt to the requisition and say what it is for. We also need two signatures on the form to show that the expense was approved.

Bobbie Landon spoke about the funds left over from a prior effort to roof the pool Bobbie said she was asked by Jackie Hall, one of the signers on the account that holds those funds, to write to the bank and what needs to be done to have that money transferred to RoosUs. Bobbi will write the letter by August 1st.

Coordinating Committee The Committee met on July 12th in Elephant Butte. There are no minutes yet

Structure Committee The group voted to drop "Dome" from their name since it didn't really apply anymore. They agreed that their job is to find structure examples, research the cost and the advantages and disadvantages of each structure and present our findings to this group.

The Structure Committee wants to contact other swimming pools and ask them questions. We passed around sample questions and Internet photos of other commercial pool structures Jane Greene said the telephone would be better than a form letter. Too many busy people won't take the time to answer a questionnaire. Jane said we could use the Community Council phone for this. Linda Phillips offered a phone card for our survey calls

Norma passed out paper so that we could write down our personal vision of a structure. We will do this again at the next full meeting.

Jackye McDaniels said she had spoken to a pool company in Las Cruces and that they declined coming to Truth or Consequences Bobbi Landon thinks there are prior plans. She will try to locate them.

Norma had contacted Erica Enyart. She is with Entrada Environmentals, an Albuquerque Pool Contractors Co. Erica asked us to send our pool dimensions and descriptions (pool house etc.) and they will look at our options. Erica said the approximate cost would probably be $155.00 a square foot. An engineer's visit would be $90.00 an hour, including travel time from Albuquerque.

It was noted that a part time cover requires man power to put it up and take it down. twice every year and that the warranties are often very limited. (5 to 10 years) requiring more effort and fundraising. A permanent structure would be better. Norma said we should also contact other local companies.

Marketing Committee Elsie Clark said the "Dive in for Nickels" was a lot of fun with lots of participants. They also sold t-shirts with our logo on them. Large size is $15.00, 1x and 2x are $17.00. They've already sold the 4x they had ordered. We wondered if we could set up a stand at Alco and Dairy Queen. Can we also do this at Loretta's and the Pool? We will check and see if Bullock's will also allow us to sell shirts there. Jackye McDaniels suggested selling water bottles with our Logo added onto them for a fund raising project. We do need matching funds for many donors. Our next meeting will be on August 25th at 5:30 in the Computer room of Ken James Senior Center. 360 W 4th Street in T or C.

Coordinating Committee 5:30 August 25th at Elephant Butte Inn

Structure Committee 1:00 pm August 27th in Betsy Robertson's home.
