In September of 2004 FEMA requested CERT volunteers from throughout the country to assist in hurricane relief in Florida and surrounding areas.  Sierra County CERT responded by sending 17 CERT members.  This was by far the largest group from New Mexico.

Sierra County CERT members have responded to a number of local emergencies and non-emergencies too.  Working in conjunction with the Sierra County Emergency Manager, CERT members have participated in emergency preparedness drills.  They have also assisted the American Red Cross and local law enforcement agencies.  Community outreach is being done by participating in National Night Out, Elephant Days, Ben Archer Health Fair and the Sierra County Fair.

To be a CERT members need to complete about 40 hours of training.  All materials and cost of training is provided by the grant.  Once certified, members are able to respond to a particular community in any type of emergency.  Cert members assist by applying the basic response and organizational skills that they learned during training.
